Class Information

Welcome to 3rd grade!  It is going to be an exciting year full of learning and growing. My name is Ms. Marissa Garcia-Perez. I know that we will be getting to know each other throughout the year. I would like to take the time to give you information about the class so that you can familiarize yourself with your child’s daily routine.

Arrival/Dismissal:   We begin our morning review immediately, so it is important that your child arrive on time.  We dismiss at 3:00 at the side entrance, by the cafeteria. Please pick-up your child on time and keep the traffic line moving.  Your child’s safety is of utmost importance to me; therefore, I will only release your child to you. If you have made arrangements for another parent or relative to pick them up, please send a note that day or call the office to explain who will be picking them up.  

Breakfast in the Classroom:  Please take advantage of the free breakfast in the classroom.  Students must arrive at 7:30 in order to eat breakfast. Breakfast is from 7:30--7:50.  If they arrive late they will not be served breakfast.  

Toys

Fidget toys, electronics, slime, Pokémon Cards are not allowed. Please do not let your child bring these items from home. They cause a big distraction and other kids always want to borrow them. If a child brings a toy to school, I will pick it up and only return it to the parents.

Supplies: Your child is expected to be prepared with all supplies.   In addition to the supplies listed on the U.I.S.D list, the students will need:  hand sanitizer and ear buds for the Chromebooks. Donations of computer paper, Lysol wipes, thin Expo markers,  and other supplies throughout the year are always appreciated.

Class work:  The class work must be completed in class.  Students will be given enough time to complete their assignment before moving onto another subject. If a child is falling behind on their work because they do not understand a concept, I will work with them on their assignment. If they are falling behind because of discipline, they will complete it during their own free time. They will not be allowed to complete class work at home.

Tests:   Test grades count as 50% of your child’s grade.  Students may be given an opportunity to retest if they receive a failing grade. The highest grade given for a re-testing assessment will be a grade of 70. A student will receive the higher of the two grades earned on either the original test or the retest. (Examinations are considered Checkpoint test, and/or unit test; The definition does not include class assignments, daily work, homework, pop quizzes, etc.)

A/A &B Honor Roll:  To be eligible for A Honor Roll a student must receive A’s in all core content areas on a six weeks basis.  To be eligible for A & B Honor Roll a student must receive a minimum of three A’s in three of the five core content areas and must earn no less than a B in the remaining core content areas.  The student will be awarded a medal at the end of the year if they meet the criteria for every six weeks period.

Accelerated Reading Program:  The students are expected to participate in the AR Program throughout the school year.  They are given plenty of opportunities to read in class, but are highly encouraged to read at home as well.  The books they are expected to read are at their reading level. The will have a goal for each six weeks, and a year goal that they must meet in order to receive incentives and a trophy at the end of the school year.  Parents are encouraged to check out books from our library and to attend AR Reading sessions on Wednesday evenings in the library. Students who take advantage of this program throughout the year are more likely to show progress in all content areas.

Rules: P.B.I.S. Program (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports).

Positive Reinforcement: Students will have multiple opportunities to earn rewards for excellent behavior.  In the classroom, I use Class Dojo to reinforce good behavior. Please sign up as soon as possible to receive notifications  regarding your child’s daily activities. Every time a child is caught doing something good or following rules, they receive tickets I have daily raffles for classroom privileges. You will be hearing about this from your child. . (Examples: sit with a buddy, 15 min free computer time, sit in the teacher's chair, free book, etc.)     

Parent Conferences/ Contact: I am available for scheduled parent conferences during my planning period (12:35-1:20) and after school 3:15-4:00.  Feel free to schedule a conference for any reason. You may reach me by e-mail at muribe@uisd.net.

Birthday Parties:  If you would like to schedule an in-class birthday party, please let me know in advance.  Also, make sure you send napkins, plates, and utensils, etc. I do not have those things readily available.  Birthday candles are not allowed. Birthday parties will only be celebrated on Fridays at 2:30.

 I know this year will be a fantastic year!  By working together, we will help your child will reach his/her full potential.
